What are points?
Trackable actions
Points allow developers to create an incentive mechanism to attract, engage and retain end users. They accrue based on verifiable activities. Making a purchase, following a specific handle, completing a trade, having an account for a specific period of time — these are all measurable actions that may be calculated as points.
Value weighted interpretations
Points represent an interpretation of actions with value assigned by app developers or systems. A single activity may have different value to different systems. A Gitcoin Passport stamp, for example, may be weighted in one way to calculate a proof-of-humanity score but interpreted differently for an alternative purpose, like a follower leaderboard.
Incentive Mechanisms
Points can significantly influence behavior by offering value back to users in exchange for activity that supports the primary objectives of the project. Games use points — often multiple versions of them — and they're becoming more widely used across a range of product types.
Rewards & Reputation
